On 27th September we had an enjoyable visit to the award-winning Viaduct Park in Stockport. We were met by Sam Bailey, the lead landscape architect on the scheme who showed us around and told us about the creation of this space.
It is the newest park in the town and was opened in 2024. It covers two acres and is partly built on the roof of the new Stockport Interchange (the old bus staion).
In the words of Cllr Mark Hunter: “Viaduct Park is not just a park, it is the heartbeat of Stockport’s transformation. The winning name is a great nod to our iconic Viaduct and it’s fitting that the park will provide great views of this amazing structure for years to come.”
While the park itself does not cover a large area, the landscaping extends up towards the railway station along a new link over a bridge, and down to the River Mersey, where it links with the Trans Pennine Trail.
The visit was followed by lunch at the café of the Plaza cinema, which is adjacent to the Interchange. This is a 1930s Super Cinema and Variety Theatre, recently refurbished with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund, amongst others.
