West Derby Society heard last week that the Liverpool Botanic Collection at Croxteth Hall in Liverpool may be going to be closed down, with the horticulturists found other jobs and plants found other homes or binned. The collection dates back to William Roscoe (1783 – 1831) an orchid enthusiast and creator of Liverpool’s early Botanic Garden.

The Society mounted a newspaper and twitter campaign and have managed to get the Council to deny they ever talked about closure & redundancy. A similar situation was explored in 2014, but was stopped, again using the local paper. This has made a number of people think about trying to get the Collection on a less precarious footing. The Society are planning to hold a meeting in the Liverpool Athenaeum towards the end of April where they will invite politicians and local community leaders to a presentation on the 200 year history of the collection, and host a discussion on how to protect it in the future.
