April Event

by Sue Woodhouse | Apr 2, 2025 | events, Gardens, Welcome

Ordsall Hall, 322 Ordsall Lane, Salford M5 3AN – Wednesday 23rd April 11:00am

Jo, the Head Gardener is looking forward to showing us round the gardens at Ordsall Hall on St George’s Day.  She estimates that the fruit trees will be in full blossom and other areas of the gardens at their colourful best.

The garden tour will begin at 11.00.  Those who arrive with time to spare will be able to buy themselves tea or coffee inside the hall, which is free to enter.  Jo will lead us round the gardens and point out features of interest, as well as describing how the gardens have evolved since Elizabethan times and giving us a glimpse into the future.

After the tour there will be a buffet lunch and time to explore the Hall at our own pace.  Laminated plans of the property can be borrowed from reception, and further material is available specific to the various rooms as we pass through.  There are QR codes to scan too, so it will be possible to read further information if you have a smart phone.

The ground floor is mainly flat though there are sometimes a couple of steps between rooms.  The first floor can be reached by lift, one in each wing.  There is currently an exhibition of dog paintings by the Salford artist Harold Riley.

Inside the Hall, various displays tell its story and those of people who have lived there.  There is also a short video introduction.

The gardens feature a late Tudor style knot garden; a traditional 20th century allotment; Herb Garden with medieval and Tudor herbs alongside those grown today; ornamental borders containing flowers cherished by the Tudors; and an orchard of historic fruit varieties. There are also a number of stone artefacts on display challenging visitors to guess what they were.
