Recording, promoting & protecting

We work to:

Safeguard Lancashire’s historic designed landscapes through planning casework and supporting conservation.

The Conservation and Planning Group comments on planning proposals which affect Historic England Registered Parks and Gardens in Lancashire. We receive notification of proposals either as planning applications or planning policy consultations via The Gardens Trust who prepare weekly lists for England and Wales.

We also receive consultations directly from local authorities in relation to applications affecting unregistered sites. We monitor and make comments on policy development in Local Plans and on individual planning applications.

We also work with Local Authorities, other organisations and groups and landowners to encourage conservation and protection of Lancashire’s Unregistered Designed Landscapes.

Working with the Research and Recording Group we aim to produce a gazetteer of sites identifying the significance of all unregistered sites. The gazetteer will be useful in the planning process and will provide information about sites for general use.

We welcome comments enquiries or suggestions about any of our historic designed landscapes, particularly if they are under any type of threat.

The Planning System in England and the Protection of Historic Parks and Gardens

(The Gardens Trust 2016)

The Gardens Trust was formed in July 2015 following the merger of The Garden History Society and the Association of Gardens Trusts, representing the County Gardens Trusts of England and Wales. The Garden History Society had been granted statutory consultee status in the Planning System in 1995, and The Gardens Trust continues in the role as statutory consultee.

The Gardens Trust’s conservation team, working closely with volunteers in the County Gardens Trusts assesses planning applications in relation to registered gardens and landscapes in England and Wales.

The Gardens Trust is the statutory consultee for planning applications which affect sites on the Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.

Lancashire Gardens Trust is a member of The Gardens Trust and acts on its behalf in responding to consultations in the historic County of Lancashire, but excluding areas now in Cumbria. We therefore cover all of the post 1974 area of Lancashire County, as well as Merseyside (north of Mersey) and most of the Greater Manchester Authorities (north of Rivers Mersey and Tame).
